It was a letter from Malcolm’s family. “At the time of his passing, Malcolm was well into the process of recording his companion album to Swimming, entitled Circles. Two different styles complementing each other, completing a circle. Swimming in Circles was the concept. He had been working with Jon Brion, who after hearing some early versions of songs, cleared his calendar to help Malcolm fine-tune them. After his passing, Jon dedicated himself to finishing Circles based on his time and conversations with Malcolm. We are eternally grateful to Jon and to those who gave their best to the difficult and emotional task of putting out this body of work.” The letter identified that this was a complicated release. But, as they said, “we simply know that it was important to Malcolm for the world to hear it.” Circles is the sixth and final studio album by Mac Miller. It’s less of a rap album, more just the continued evolution of an artist. He was exploring, both in sound and concept. Mac told Craig Jenkins for Vulture, “People need to expand their minds, me included. The mind is never done expanding.”

Circles was recorded during the same sessions, intended as a companion
piece and meant to form a single body of work Mac referred to as Swimming
in Circles. It plays as a true continuation of the sound and energy Mac was
perfecting on Swimming—subtle, sophisticated compositions full of subtle
flourishes.

Mac’s lyrics are sweet and sensitive throughout, wistful and witty. He raps
ably as ever on these songs, but you could just as easily imagine him
performing them as solo piano numbers. Circles was largely recorded by the
time of Mac’s passing and was completed by Jon Brion, guided by his
conversations with Mac during time spent together in the studio.

For Mac, evolution was the constant, the thread linking the phases of career.
As an artist and an individual, Mac was committed to perpetual growth, to
digging deeper into his own experiences and enthusiasms and using them to
widen the scope of his musical world. He approached artistic collaboration as
a natural result of deep friendships. He was funny, he was tender, he was a
meticulous craftsman driven by diligence and attention to detail. His body of
work is a testament to the potential of fearless self-searching, and that
willingness to share his authentic self created a profound, lasting bond with
his audiences, present and future.

On January 8, 2020, a post was added to Mac Miller’s Instagram page. It’s a page that is visited frequently, by fans who continue to leave comments, proof that his memory is never forgotten. It was a letter from Malcolm’s family.
