In 2016, Mac made an album about love. 

He called it The Divine Feminine, his fourth studio album. For ten tracks Mac explored intimacy, creating a project about falling in love and learning from love. The theme gave the album a cohesion and a direction, even if the sound changed from song to song, mood to mood. 

The album spawned three singles, the funky “Dang!” with Anderson Paak, the smooth “We” featuring Cee-Lo, and “My Favorite Part,” a duet with Ariana Grande. Additionally, Mac reunited with Kendrick Lamar on “God is Fair, Sexy Nasty,” a song with Robert Glasper on piano, created the eight minute “Cinderella” with Ty Dolla Sign and made a song with his protege Njomza on “Planet God Damn.” 

The Divine Feminine debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and soon after, Mac hit the road on a three month, 43-stop North American tour. Sheldon Pierce, for Pitchfork wrote “it’s easily his most intoxicating release yet, an odyssey of soulful compositions paring down his expansive and eclectic soundboard from the last few years into something distinctly cozy and pleasant.” 

He was evolving as a man, and the music followed suit. Mac and his music were growing together.

The Divine Feminine is a record about love in all of its forms. Mac touches
on the excitement of a new, evolving affair on “Cinderella,” laments a
messy but compelling connection over a springy funk bassline on “Dang!”, and
ends the album with a touching spoken word outro from his grandmother
about her relationship with his grandfather. The Divine Feminine is the
warmest, most affirming album in Mac’s discography.
