Faces is the eleventh mixtape by Mac Miller, released as a free download in May 2014. 

It is a highly personal album and was his darkest lyrical album to date, the apex of Mac using music to talk through his battles with addiction and the mounting pressures of the world. Craig Jenkins, in Pitchfork, said “If Faces’ good-times-are-killing-me terrors seem overbearing, they’re often offset by a sense that music is his salvation.”

Even with the intensity, however, the music was very accessible. And if you shared any similar struggles, the music was both relatable and therapeutic. 

Faces includes a roster that further shows the musical community Mac was building. Rick Ross and Mac collaborate on “Insomniak” and Mike Jones appears on “Uber.” Earl Sweatshirt follows up his feature on 2013’s Watching Movies with the Lights Off with verses on “Polo Jeans” and “New Faces v2,” two songs that he also produced. Thundercat co-produced “Colors and Shapes” with Mac, under his “Larry Fisherman” pseudonym. Frequent collaborators Schoolboy Q, Sir Michael Rocks, and Ab-Soul also make appearances, as well as Vince Staples on the 9th Wonder-produced “Rain.” 

The mixtape, 24 tracks in total, is one filled with honesty. It’s both a hard listen and a testament to Mac’s vulnerability, something he felt compared to sharing with the world. 

At the end of his Pitchfork review of Faces, Jenkins accurately describes Mac’s transformation. “It might seem daunting, drug-crazed and unwieldy at the outset, but given the proper time and patience, the mixtape proves to be Mac’s most consistently honest and personal work to date. Early on “Here We Go” advises that he “ain’t little Malcolm with the baby face” anymore, and whatever memory of that goofy, affable kid remains, Faces is its slow and methodical death and dismemberment.”

Faces is the eleventh mixtape by Mac Miller, released as a free download in May 2014. 

It is a highly personal album and was his darkest lyrical album to date, the apex of Mac using music to talk through his battles with addiction and the mounting pressures of the world. Craig Jenkins, in Pitchfork, said “If Faces’ good-times-are-killing-me terrors seem overbearing, they’re often offset by a sense that music is his salvation.”

Even with the intensity, however, the music was very accessible. And if you shared any similar struggles, the music was both relatable and therapeutic. 

Faces includes a roster that further shows the musical community Mac was building. Rick Ross and Mac collaborate on “Insomniak” and Mike Jones appears on “Uber.” Earl Sweatshirt follows up his feature on 2013’s Watching Movies with the Lights Off with verses on “Polo Jeans” and “New Faces v2,” two songs that he also produced. Thundercat co-produced “Colors and Shapes” with Mac, under his “Larry Fisherman” pseudonym. Frequent collaborators Schoolboy Q, Sir Michael Rocks, and Ab-Soul also make appearances, as well as Vince Staples on the 9th Wonder-produced “Rain.” 

The mixtape, 24 tracks in total, is one filled with honesty. It’s both a hard listen and a testament to Mac’s vulnerability, something he felt compared to sharing with the world. 

At the end of his Pitchfork review of Faces, Jenkins accurately describes Mac’s transformation. “It might seem daunting, drug-crazed and unwieldy at the outset, but given the proper time and patience, the mixtape proves to be Mac’s most consistently honest and personal work to date. Early on “Here We Go” advises that he “ain’t little Malcolm with the baby face” anymore, and whatever memory of that goofy, affable kid remains, Faces is its slow and methodical death and dismemberment.”

On his tenth mixtape, Mac settled into the down-tempo vibe he’d introduced
on Watching Movies with the Sound Off. He produced most of Faces himself
and let it run long, with beats made for reflective head-nodding and close
listening. While Mac had never shied away from introspection in his lyrics,
Faces lingered more intensely on themes like self-doubt, the pressures of
fame, and addiction.

Mac’s willingness to expose uncomfortable truths—and his tendency to cut
his heaviest confessions with a goofy punchline—is a big part of what made
him such a relatable figure, beloved by so many. Faces was also the first
release on Remember Music, Mac’s label.

Faces is the eleventh mixtape by Mac Miller, released as a free download in May 2014.
It is a highly personal album and was his darkest lyrical album to date, the
apex of Mac using music to talk through his battles with addiction and the
mounting pressures of the world. Craig Jenkins, in Pitchfork, said “If Faces’
good-times-are-killing-me terrors seem overbearing, they’re often offset by a
sense that music is his salvation.”
Even with the intensity, however, the music was very accessible. And if you
shared any similar struggles, the music was both relatable and therapeutic.
