On August 6, 2018, music fans saw Mac Miller sitting on a stool. 

 

NPR released the video for the latest in their Tiny Desk Concert series and there was Mac, in a t-shirt and his copper “Don’t Trip” hat. He performed three new songs that were built for the stripped down stage, “Small Worlds” and “What’s the Use?,” and “2009.” The tracks were standouts from Swimming, his fifth studio album, released three days earlier. 

 

For Swimming’s 13 songs, Miller reflects on his life as well as his future, rapping and singing and treating his voice like the instrument that it proved to be. For The Guardian, writer Meaghan Garvey calls the album a “journey towards self-acceptance,” one that “embraces the possibility that he’ll never have it all figured out.” Undeniably ambitious, it’s the rare album that brings you into an artist’s process, as he works on his craft, and himself. 

 

Craig Jenkins, the music critic for Vulture, wrote “Swimming seems most concerned with quieting stress and seeking out lasting peace.” Mac told Jenkins, in response to Swimming debuting at No. 3, behind Travis Scott and Drake, “I’m less concerned with being king of the hill than being able to put shit out.”

 

Just over a month after the album’s release, on September 7, Mac passed away at the age of 26. The following year, he was posthumously nominated for a Grammy Award, for Best Rap Album.

If The Divine Feminine captures Mac coming into a new space of sensitivity,
then Swimming finds him getting comfortable there, directing some of that
compassion back towards himself—“I was drowning but now I’m
swimming through stressful waters to relief,” he sings on the opening track.
Mac’s hard-earned prowess as a sonic architect is evident here. By 2018 he
had sanded the rougher edges of his sound smooth, learned how to make all
of the pieces fit just so, and assembled a roster of collaborators spanning
contemporaries like Thundercat, John Mayer, and DJ Dahi and legends like
Jon Brion to bring it all together. Swimming was nominated for the Grammy
Award for Best Rap Album.

On August 6, 2018, music fans saw Mac Miller sitting on a stool.
NPR released the video for the latest in their Tiny Desk Concert series and there was Mac, in at-shirt and his copper “Don’t Trip” hat. He performed three new songs that were built for the stripped down stage, “Small Worlds” and “What’s the Use?,” and “2009.” The tracks were standouts from Swimming, his fifth studio album, released three days earlier.
