In 2013, when Mac released his second studio album, "Watching Movies with the Sound Off,” he established himself as the center of an incredible musical orbit. 

The first song, “The Star Room,” was co-written and produced by Earl Sweatshirt, under the moniker randomblackdude. Track 3, “I’m Not Real,” features Earl on a verse. “S.D.S.” was produced by Flying Lotus and “Bird Call” was produced by Clams Casino and “Goosebumpz” was produced by Diplo. “Matches” features Ab-Soul and “Gees” features Schoolboy Q, two members of Top Dawg Entertainment. “Objets in the Mirror” is a collaboration between Mac and Pharrell Williams. “Red Dot Music” features Action Bronson and was produced by The Alchemist. “Suplexes Inside of Duplexes” has a verse from Jay Electronica. And “O.K.” was produced by Tyler, The Creator and features a verse from Tyler, The Creator. 

Pitchfork called it “a quantum leap in artistry” from his debut album. XXL noted,  "Despite the disparity of styles, the album's sequencing affords it a greater sense of cohesion. Listeners will have little trouble transitioning between the booming ‘Watching Movies’ and more subdued affairs like ‘Suplexes Inside of Complexes And Duplexes.’ This is due to Mac's excellent production throughout as Larry Fisherman".

Mac produced five songs on the album, and for the first time oversaw the production of his album. This fact gave Watching Movies with the Sound Off some continuity, which allowed for it to be a sonically adventurous album. Mac was becoming a musical force, from his own talents to the company he kept.

Mac relocated to Los Angeles in late 2012, landing in Studio City and
turning his home studio, The Sanctuary, into a hub for his circle of friends
and collaborators. Watching Movies with the Sound Off (a reference to Mac’s
preferred ambiance while making music) is a stylistic leap forward from
Blue Slide Park, released just 18 months prior.

Mac had matured as an MC, equally comfortable sitting in the pocket as he
was flexing dense, knotted flows. He was beginning to shine as a producer,
too—five of the beats here are his own, credited to his Larry Fisherman alias.
Also features production from Earl Sweatshirt, Flying Lotus, and Alchemist,
raps from ScHoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, and Action Bronson, and a writing assist
from Pharrell Williams on “Objects in the Mirror.”
